Officer Gordon French
END OF WATCH
February 13, 1953
Officer Gordon G. French was born in Chicago, Illinois, on April 13, 1904. In 1949, after searching for a place to call home, the French family settled into a house on Myrtle Street. In September of 1949, he joined the Laguna Beach Police Department as a police officer. During his life, he obtained his pilot license, an insurance investigator certificate, and his detective certification.
On February 13, 1953, Gordon was helping fellow officers process two suspects who were arrested for writing fraudulent checks. While Gordon was processing their personal property, one of the suspects drew a concealed revolver and pointed it at Gordon. Gordon attempted to stop the armed suspect from escaping and was shot in the abdomen. After shooting Gordon, the suspect fled on foot. Gordon collapsed in the lobby and his partners rendered medical aid. They transported him to a local trauma center in critical condition. Despite lifesaving efforts, Gordon succumbed to his injuries. He was 47 years old and a police officer for three years at the time of his passing. The suspect was found deceased several hours later in a nearby city.
Gordon was survived by his wife, Jean, and his children, Anthony and Linda. Services for Gordon were held at the Laguna Beach Funeral Home which was located on South Coast Highway and Anita Street. Following Gordon’s death, the community advocated for a hospital within the City. Ultimately a hospital was built on Coast Highway in South Laguna, and the emergency room was dedicated to Gordon.
In honor and remembrance of Officer Gordon G. French’s sacrifice, his name is forever engraved on the Laguna Beach Police Department’s Memorial, Eternal Legacy, the Orange County Peace Officers’ Memorial in Tustin, the California Peace Officers’ Memorial in Sacramento, and the National Peace Officers’ Memorial in Washington, DC.
We will forever remember Officer Gordon G. French for his service to the City and his sacrifice for the community of Laguna Beach.
